Winter here finds every weak point in a roof.
Heavy snow, weeks of freeze and thaw, and wind off the lake put more stress on a roof than almost anywhere else in the state. A roof that would last elsewhere can fail early here if the details are wrong.
Snow sits on a warm roof
Heat leaking through the attic warms the roof deck from below, and the snow on top starts to melt even when the air is well below freezing.
Meltwater runs downhill
Water runs beneath the snow toward the eave. There is no heated space under the overhang, so the roof there stays cold.
It refreezes at the eave
The water freezes into a ridge of ice along the edge of the roof. Every thaw and freeze adds another layer.
Water backs up under the shingles
New meltwater pools behind the dam, works up under the shingles, and shows up as a stain on the ceiling inside.

- Water that gets into a seam, a nail hole or a cracked flashing expands every time it freezes, widening the gap a little more each cycle.
- Snow load
- Wet snow is heavy. Flat and low-slope commercial roofs carry it for weeks, and drainage that works in summer can be blocked solid in January.
- Wind and driven rain
- Open exposure across the lake lifts poorly fastened shingles and pushes rain under ridge caps and around chimneys.

Do you charge for an estimate?
No. We come out, inspect the roof and give you a written estimate at no cost and with no obligation.
Do you do repairs, or only full replacements?
Both. If a repair will genuinely solve the problem, that is what we will recommend. If the roof is at the end of its life, we will tell you that too and explain why.
What roofing materials do you install?
Asphalt shingle, synthetic shingle, standing seam metal, natural slate and synthetic slate for residential work, plus commercial roofing systems, coatings and waterproofing. We fabricate custom sheet metal in our own shop.
Do you work on commercial and industrial buildings?
Yes. Commercial and industrial roofing is a core part of our work, alongside residential.
Are your crews certified?
Our roofers are trained and hold manufacturer certifications for the products they install. Certified installation is typically a condition of manufacturer warranties.
Do you remove snow from roofs?
Yes. Roof snow removal is one of our year-round services and helps prevent ice dams and structural strain during heavy winters.
Which roofing material is right for my roof?
Not every material suits every roof. A flat or low-slope roof needs a different system, such as a single-ply membrane or coating, than a steep-pitched roof that can take shingle, metal or slate. Style, colour and cost all factor in, and several options now carry green attributes such as ENERGY STAR ratings or recycled content. We look at your roof and walk you through the choices that fit it.
Are you insured, and is the work warrantied?
Yes. Lake Champlain Roofing is a certified roofing contractor carrying proper insurance, and our work comes with a full warranty in addition to the manufacturer warranty on the products we install.
Can I order custom sheet metal from you?
Yes. Our sheet metal shop fabricates flashing, trim, drip edge, valleys and standing seam panels. Call with your dimensions and finish and we will quote the order, whether or not we are installing it.
When do you book roof installations?
Roof replacements and new installations book for the spring-to-fall season, and slots fill early, so call ahead. Repairs, inspections and roof snow removal run year round.
What area do you serve?
We are based in Plattsburgh, NY and serve Clinton, Franklin and Essex Counties and the surrounding North Country. Call us and we will confirm whether we cover your location.
